#selfieforacause – Subtract or add?

Today is a look back at a post written from the nearly year-long project called #selfieforacause #selfieadventure2014.

The project involved posting a selfie each day and promoting a non-profit I believed was making a positive difference in the world. Some days though, I would off-road a bit and promote an idea or thought representing the change I wanted for the world.  You can continue to watch the project evolve on the #selfieforacause Facebook page with the remarkable Mary Beth Cowardin.

As I think about how I want to spend these next 40 days, I find myself landing in the same place I did last year when I decided to take the #selfieforacause project off-roading.

The following was posted on Wednesday, March 5, 2014:

It’s off-roading Wednesday at the great ‪#‎selfieadventure2014‬ and rather than featuring a particular non-profit today, the focus is on YOU! Today is also the first day of Lent.

While the conversation around many water coolers today has been about what people are giving up for the next 40 days, I have a different question for you.

What can you add for the next 40 days?

Here’s the idea – what if every day, for the next 40 days, starting today, each of us added something in the same spirit we contemplate subtracting something from our lives? The possibilities of things to add for the next 40 days are endless: writing a hand-written note of appreciation and dropping it in the mail (getting a note in the mail is the best!); writing a FB post about someone who means a lot to you (thank you Jordan Kush for planting this seed); buying a coffee for the stranger behind you; donating blood; asking that friend to lunch you’ve been meaning to reconnect with since last year; reading a book to a child; dropping off groceries at the local food pantry; visiting a shut-in who is as over this winter as you are.

Here’s my wonder – if we each add something for the next 40 days, can this be the collective step we take towards creating positive change in our world?

I hope you’ll pop-in periodically and share one of the somethings you’ve added over these next 40 days. And, if you’re giving something up for the next 40 days, I’d love to hear about that experience as well.

For the next 40 days, let’s be the positive change we want for the world!
