A new thing under the sun

In 1904, Mary Stewart, a high school principal in Longmont, Colorado and a member of the Woman’s Club of Colorado Springs wrote what she called a “Collect for Club Women.”

It’s interesting to note that the club was formed in 1902. One hundred women attended the club’s first meeting. Dedicated and ambitious women struggling with the issues of suffrage and entry into professional, business and community leadership.

With that context in mind, it’s fascinating to learn Mary’s decision to refer to her writing as a Collect.

images-12She was quoted as saying,  “I called it a ‘Collect for Club Women’ because I felt that women working together, with wide interests in large ends, which was a new thing under the sun and that, perhaps they had need for a special petition and meditation of their own.”

Wow! As you read Mary’s Collect below, you’ll recognize it as being as pertinent and meaningful of a mediation for women today as it was 111 years ago.

May you find opportunities throughout your modern day to connect with the common human heart of us all!

Mary’s Collect – her perfectly, perfect voice and in my opinion, the 1900’s front-runner of a Deepak Chopra and Oprah Super Soul Sunday!

Keep us, oh God from pettiness;

let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.

Let us be done with fault-finding

and leave off self-seeking.

May we put away all pretense

and meet each other face to face,

wtihout self-pity and without prejudice.

May we never be hasty in judgement

and always generous.

Let us take time for all things;

and to grow calm, serene, gentle.

Teach us to put into action

our better impulses,

straightforward and unafraid.

Grant that we may realize it is

the little things that create differences,

that in the big things of life we are at one.

And may we strive to touch and to know

the great, common human heart of us all.

And, oh Lord God, let us forget not

to be kind!

–Mary Stewart, 1904
